| about us > programs | history | locations | board of directors | center for work & family | resourcesWelcome ...to Family Service of Greater New Orleans. Because strong families build strong communities, Family Service has a critical mission to fulfill. That mission is to strengthen the emotional health and foster the self-sufficiency of families and individuals. The challenges facing New Orleans' families today cannot be overstated or underestimated. Families in all socioeconomic brackets are struggling with changing roles and confusing value systems. Groups with special needs and concerns include children requiring foster care or independent living skills, financially disadvantaged families, those threatened with homelessness and families trapped in patterns of violence, addiction or abuse. Each year, Family Service helps more than 16,500 people work their way through personal and interpersonal conflicts, providing therapy for individuals, couples, adults, teenagers and families on issues ranging from stress to depression to alcohol and drug dependency or post-trauma. The organization also takes an active role in breaking destructive cycles in the community by reaching out to at-risk children in the classroom and those in the criminal justice system.
