The Hibernia Symposium

The greater New Orleans area has emerged as an educational center for family therapy, with master's and doctoral degree programs at the University of New Orleans, Tulane University, Our Lady of Holy Cross and Southern University-New Orleans.

Each year, Family Service of Greater New Orleans and Hibernia National Bank present the Hibernia Clinical Symposium, which brings to the community an expert of national reputation to address current issues in family therapy.

The symposium provides a valuable continuing education opportunity for professionals in all sectors of social services and mental health throughout Louisiana — apprising them of the very latest in treatment and techniques. It also offers a unique educational forum for Family Service student interns to present research in the fields of marriage and family therapy, social work and counseling and to confer with a national expert.

New Orleanians and other Louisiana residents, in turn, benefit from renewed expertise and guidance in personal mental health, parenting and relationships.

The Hibernia Clinical Symposium is made possible by a generously endowed capital campaign gift from Hibernia National Bank.

Plans are in progress to find a speaker for 2008

Previous speakers have included:

  • Dr. Scott Miller of the Institute for the Study of Therapeutic Change in Chicago

  • Dr. Lenore Terr, a childhood trauma expert at the University of California San Francisco Medical Center;

  • Dr. Ellen F. Wachtel of the DePaul-Tulane Behavioral Health Center; and

  • William Pinsof, president of the Family Institute at Northwestern University in Illinois.

Past symposiums have been approved for continuing education credit by both the National Association of Social Workers and the Louisiana Counseling Association.
